Our campground

Whānau is Maorian for 'family', but in New Zealand it is also used for friends and communities. It means that you look out for each other, just like the pioneers of the new land in the Noordoostpolder. At our mini-glamping it will hopefully feel just like coming home. The tents are spacious, with the cosiness of a campsite. Enjoy the casual atmosphere just behind the dike of the IJsselmeer.

The Noordoostpolder

Our farm is located on the bottom of the Zuiderzee at about 4 meters below sea level. Preparatory work was started in 1936 and in 1939 the dike between Lemmer and Urk was closed. Anyone who wanted to settle in the 'new land' after Prohibition had to meet strict requirements. Only the farmers who lost their business in Zeeland after the flood disaster were allowed to settle here without a selection procedure, including the first residents of our farm.

Our farm

After the flood disaster of February 1953, a family comes from the island of Tholen in Zeeland to the Noordoostpolder. They get a mixed farm with twenty cows and two striking Fox draft horses with which they do the land work. In the early years, the family is very homesick, but there is great solidarity in the Noordoostpolder. After almost 20 years, the family stops farming because there is no future for the next generation on a small scale. The land goes to the neighbor and in 1987 a couple buys the farm to turn it into a campsite. We are the 5th residents from 2017.
